The Enduring Impact of Anthony Bourdain
Welcome to The Brighter Side of Everything.
This newsletter serves a simple purpose → To help you build optimism, resilience and a solution-focused perspective.
Each week, I’ll share actionable insights that not only brighten your day but position you to be a leader within your own life and seize life’s opportunities.
Read time: 9-11 minutes.
Hi everyone,
This morning I awoke on the beautiful Gold Coast, Australia.
I’m here with my wife and kids visiting her wonderful and supportive parents for a few days before returning to Canada.
While the last couple of weeks have been some of the most challenging I have faced (following my Mum’s passing), watching the sun rise this morning reminded me that there is beauty all around us, even in difficult times.
My mum is the sun rising in the East, she is the shimmering water on the ocean, she is the gentle breeze and every wave that kisses the shore.
I feel her presence, reminding me that even in loss, there is a connection that transcends time and space.
Her love continues to guide me, just as the sun guides each day.
In moments like these, I often reflect on the choices we have in our lives.
Watching the sunrise over the Broadwater.
Do you ever decide what kind of day you want to have when you wake up?
It’s a simple question.
One that many of us don’t take the time to consider.
The truth is, there’s a lot of power in shaping your own experience from the moment you rise.
Now, let’s be honest - do we get it right every time?
Not at all.
Life is unpredictable and bumps along the way are inevitable.
But here’s the crucial part: YOU have the ability to choose whether a challenging ten minutes will define the rest of your day.
So, take a moment to be intentional.
Don’t be wishy-washy.
Make the choice.
If you’re not deciding, then someone or something else is steering your day.
Is that really what you want?
Today, try this: decide the kind of day you want to create and stick to it.
When challenges come up - and they will - redirect your focus back to that choice.
Don’t let anything knock you off your path.
You have more control over your day than you might think.
Optimism can be trained like a muscle and with practice, you’ll deflect challenges like water off a duck’s back.
Give it a try and see how your perspective shifts.
See you on the Brighter Side,
Chris

Anthony Bourdain
Authenticity Above All
Anthony Bourdain was more than just a chef or a television personality; he was a storyteller who travelled the world.
He loved to share the beauty of diverse cultures through their food.
I remember watching him savour a bowl of pho on the bustling streets of Hanoi, his eyes lighting up with each bite.
It wasn’t just about the flavour; it was about the people, the history and the stories woven into every dish.
Bourdain had an incredible ability to connect with others, reminding us that food is a universal language that transcends borders.
His approach to life was a masterclass in curiosity, authenticity and embracing the unknown.
The Journey of Change
Bourdain's life was all about embracing change and exploring new experiences.
His journey began with the simple essay "Don’t Eat Before Reading This," which launched him into the spotlight and led to his famous book, Kitchen Confidential.
Beneath the fame, he was a man filled with curiosity and humility.
He once said, “Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life - and travel - leaves marks on you.”
This idea of being open to new experiences and learning from them was central to his philosophy.
“If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel—as far and as widely as possible."
Embracing New Experiences
Bourdain approached his travels with an open mind, ready to dive into different cultures.
Whether he was sharing a drink in a small bar or participating in Maasai traditions in Kenya, he believed in stepping out of your comfort zone.
He famously said, “I want to try everything once.”
I love this concept.
This willingness to embrace the unfamiliar not only enriched his experiences but also served as a powerful reminder that the greatest growth happens when we challenge ourselves to explore beyond our usual boundaries.
This adventurous spirit wasn’t just about food; it was about understanding the world and connecting with people through their culinary traditions.
“If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.”
The Importance of Culture
Bourdain’s stories were more than just about food; they were about the history and people behind the dishes.
His shows took viewers on a journey into different cultures, where he connected with locals to share their stories.
He highlighted that food can bring people together, saying, “Good food is very often, even most often, simple food.”
This idea reminds us that the best meals often come from simple ingredients and shared experiences.
Living Authentically
Bourdain also taught us the importance of being true to ourselves.
Most admirably, he turned down big money offers that didn’t align with his values, stating, “I don’t have to agree with you to like you or respect you.”
His commitment to authenticity was a powerful reminder to live with purpose and passion.
Bourdain's dedication to authenticity extended beyond his personal choices to his professional work.
He was known for his candid approach, whether discussing the gritty realities of the culinary world or exploring complex cultural landscapes through his television shows.
His series, such as Parts Unknown and No Reservations, were celebrated not just for their culinary exploration but for their honest portrayal of the places and people he encountered.
His storytelling was marked by a refusal to gloss over uncomfortable truths, as he believed that "surfaces were never just surfaces".
He sought to uncover the deeper narratives that shaped the cultures he visited, often addressing social and political issues alongside culinary traditions.
The Journey as the Destination
Through Bourdain’s eyes, we learned that life isn’t about fitting into a perfect mould; it’s about embracing its ups and downs.
He once said, “Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.”
As we determine our paths, we can take inspiration from Bourdain's life, understanding that the journey itself is what matters.
It’s about savouring each moment, every experience and the lessons we learn along the way.
Anthony Bourdain's legacy encourages us to slow down and appreciate the richness of life.
A lesson I have chosen to live each and every day.
His adventures remind us that every meal is an opportunity to connect, every journey is a chance to grow and every moment is a gift waiting to be unwrapped.
As he once said, “I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.”
So let’s take a page from Bourdain’s book: embrace the unknown, seek out new experiences and, most importantly, savour the journey.
In doing so, we honour his memory and the lessons he imparted, ensuring that his spirit of adventure lives on in each of us.

The Connection Between Neuroplasticity and Positivity
Understanding neuroplasticity is more than just grasping brain science.
It’s a vital concept that can significantly influence your ability to maintain a positive mindset.
Neuroplasticity is a mechanism that empowers you to reconfigure your brain, turning negative habits into opportunities for growth.
It’s not about dismissing difficulties but addressing them.
Believing in your capacity to rewire your brain towards a more positive mindset is key.
When you develop neuroplasticity, you can:
Strengthen positive thinking habits.
Create new pathways for optimism.
Build a resilient mindset that supports your well-being.
Why Embracing Neuroplasticity Matters:
Building Resilience
Neuroplasticity enables your brain to adapt and recover from setbacks. Positive practices can create lasting changes in your brain's structure and function.
Enhancing Problem-Solving Skills
A positive outlook fosters creative thinking and innovative solutions. Believing in good outcomes encourages you to explore different approaches, enhancing your adaptability and resourcefulness.
Improving Mental Health
Adopting a hopeful perspective and practicing gratitude can shift your focus from negative thoughts, leading to a more content mindset.
Strengthening Relationships
Positive individuals often form stronger social bonds. Their energy attracts others, and their ability to see the best in people deepens relationships.
Boosting Physical Health
Positivity can improve physical health. Optimistic people often experience lower stress, better immune function, and longer lifespans.
Research Supporting Neuroplasticity
Here’s some compelling research to back this up:
One study demonstrated that individuals who engage in positive practices showed greater resilience in adversity, recovering emotionally and adapting more effectively to challenges.
Additional studies have underscored the connection between positive practices and improved mental health, illustrating how a hopeful mindset can reduce stress and enhance overall well-being.
Research has shown that cognitive-behavioural therapies can effectively promote neuroplastic changes that support mental health. Individuals who actively develop positive thinking habits report feeling more resilient and equipped to handle life’s challenges.
Tips to Build Positivity Through Neuroplasticity
If you’re keen on developing a more optimistic outlook, here are some practical tips to get started:
Practice Daily Gratitude: Take time each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for. This simple practice can quickly shift your focus toward the positive aspects of your life and shift your perspective from victim to empowered creator of your own experience.
Reframe Your Perspective: When faced with challenges, view them as opportunities rather than obstacles. This shift in thinking can empower you to tackle difficulties head-on. It’s no longer ‘why is this happening to me’ and more like ‘what is this teaching me’.
Surround Yourself with Positivity: Engage with positive, supportive people who uplift and inspire you. Their energy can help reinforce your optimistic mindset. The right circle creates the right you; the opposite can quickly drain you.
Visualise Positive Outcomes: Spend time imagining successful scenarios and the steps you’ll take to achieve them. Visualisation will strengthen your belief in your own capabilities. When you believe something is possible you are more motivated to take action and persist through obstacles.
Celebrate Your Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate even the smallest victories. Recognising your progress builds your confidence and reinforces a positive outlook. Every step forward is one step closer to your goal.
Final Thoughts
Neuroplasticity can be transformative.
It boosts your mental and physical health and strengthens your relationships.
When you embrace it you are better armed to tackle the challenges that will continue to come.
The difference is now you are in control of how you choose to face them and adapt.
"Just because you have a thought doesn't make it true."
Now Spinning: Music as meditation.
"Sonido Cosmico" by Hermanos Gutierrez
The music you listen to can act as a powerful form of meditation by enhancing your focus and allowing you to immerse yourself in the present moment.
Ever since my first listen, this album has provided exactly that.
It’s been a mesmerizing addition to my playlist as it uniquely blends Latin rhythms, atmospheric soundscapes and intricate guitar work.
Hermanos Gutiérrez, the talented duo of brothers Estevan and Alejandro Gutiérrez, hail from Ecuador and Switzerland.
Their music pays tribute to their Latin roots while exploring expansive sonic landscapes.
What makes "Sonido Cósmico" particularly interesting is its ability to evoke vivid imagery without lyrics.
Just close your eyes and let your mind wander.
How it can benefit you:
Mindfulness: The tranquil and meditative quality encourages mindfulness and presence, making it perfect for moments of reflection.
Enhanced focus: The instrumental nature provides an excellent backdrop for studying or working, helping to maintain concentration without distractions.
Emotional connection: The evocative melodies resonate deeply, allowing for emotional exploration and connection to your own experiences. Close your eyes and let your mind wander.
Cultural appreciation: The fusion of Latin and modern influences invites you to appreciate the richness of diverse musical traditions.
Keep in mind: music is a deeply personal experience.
Not everyone will resonate with the same sounds or styles and that’s perfectly fine.
Listening to new music is beneficial because it broadens your cultural horizons, sparks creativity and offers a therapeutic escape while connecting you to the shared human experience.
Got a recommendation?
Please share, I'm always eager to discover new music.
A Bright Idea to Consider
Lessons from the Brightest Thinkers.
Your attention can be like a flashlight. Where you point it becomes brighter, highlighted, more salient.
Multitasking - or, more specifically, task switching - is terrible for our performance, accuracy and mood.
You only have one flashlight. Not two. Not three. And your one flashlight can only ever be shining at one thing at a time. In a day when you do a lot of task switching, you’ll start having less integrity in any of the states your attention is in … you’re going to become slower, more error-prone and emotionally worn down.
Lesson: When you constantly switch tasks, you become slower, make more mistakes and feel emotionally drained. Concentrating on one task helps you work more efficiently and maintain your energy.
