Hi there, fellow optimists!
This morning, I find myself feeling a bit lethargic after indulging in far too much candy with the kids on Halloween night.
The post-sugar slump is real.
It’s hard not to smile though, when I think about the excitement that filled our home.
Our kids had a blast and both were super proud of their candy haul.
Watching them dart from house to house with their friends with excitement and gratitude is so uplifting.
Kids are awesome.
I do have to give credit to one particular house within our neighbourhood that truly set itself apart.
The outside view of our local “Haunted House”.
They turned their house into an actual haunted house that you walk through and experience fully, see above for the exterior.
The effort they put in purely to put a smile (or complete terror) on the faces of local kids for a couple of hours was extraordinary.
Time and time again, I’m amazed at the positive impact you can have on others.
That is … if you’re willing to put in the effort.
Today, let's chat about something that's been on my mind lately - the fascinating world of optimism as it relates to its tricky cousin, toxic positivity.
As someone who's spent the majority of their life exploring the infinite potential of positivity, I've come to realise that there's a fine line between embracing a positive mindset and falling into the trap of toxic positivity.
See you on the Brighter Side,
Chris
P.S. Feel free to send me feedback on how I can improve. Go on, drop me a line, I respond to every email.
Toxic vs. Genuine
You know, it's funny how life has a way of teaching us lessons.
In my younger days, I often found myself encouraging those around me to "stay positive" in the face of challenges.
While well-intentioned, I did come to realise that this approach sometimes veered into the territory of toxic positivity.
But hey, we live and learn, right?
Sometimes (actually quite often) it takes a misstep or mistake to find the right way forward.
Once I realised the impact of such an approach I shifted to a more rational & genuine approach to my positivity … and the results were immediate.
So, what's the deal with toxic positivity anyway?
Well, it's like that overly enthusiastic friend who insists everything is "fine" even when their house is on fire.
It's the knee-jerk reaction to suppress negative emotions and slap a smiley face sticker on every situation, no matter how dire.
And let me tell you, it can be as counterproductive as trying to catch smoke with your bare hands.
Dr. Jaime Zuckerman, a clinical psychologist, puts it perfectly: "Toxic positivity is the assumption, either by one's self or others, that despite a person's emotional pain or difficult situation, they should only have a positive mindset or - my pet peeve term - 'positive vibes.'"
Ouch, right?
It's like telling someone with a broken leg to just "walk it off."
Now, don't get me wrong.
I'm all about developing a positive mindset.
But there's a world of difference between genuine optimism and this forced positivity that can leave us feeling invalidated and misunderstood.
Let’s break it down, shall we?
Genuine Optimism vs. Toxic Positivity
Genuine optimism is like a sturdy umbrella.
It acknowledges the rain (those pesky negative emotions or challenging situations) but provides shelter and a way forward.
It's about saying, "Yeah, this situation sucks, but I believe we can find a way through it."
It’s grounded in reality but fueled by hope.
On the flip side, toxic positivity is like pretending it's not raining at all.
It's denying the reality of our experiences and emotions, which is as useful as trying to catch smoke with your bare hands.
A Play on Words: The Brighter Side of Everything
When naming this newsletter The Brighter Side of Everything, I wanted to playfully poke fun at the familiar phrase "always look on the bright side."
Why?
While the saying encourages a positive outlook, it often overlooks the complexities of real-life emotions and experiences.
My focus is on finding that brighter side through a lens of authenticity and rational optimism - not through the lens of forced positivity.
By emphasising that we can discover "the brighter side" even in challenging situations, I aim to highlight that genuine optimism involves acknowledging our struggles while still believing in our ability to overcome them.
It’s about embracing the full spectrum of human emotions rather than dismissing them with superficial cheerfulness.
This nuanced understanding is crucial.
It allows us to grow resilience and develop deeper connections with ourselves and others.
After all, true optimism is not just about wearing rose-coloured glasses; it's about recognising the shadows while still seeking out the light.
The Power of Optimism: Research Insights
Here's where it gets interesting.
It’s now 2024 and there have been numerous studies indicating that a positive outlook doesn’t just make you feel good; it’s actually beneficial for your health.
Research shows that embracing genuinely optimistic outlooks leads to significant health benefits.
For instance, a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that optimists live 11-15% longer than pessimists.
Similarly, research from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health revealed that individuals with higher optimism levels had a 22% lower risk of developing hypertension over several years.
These findings highlight how rational optimism - grounded in reality - can lead to healthier outcomes.
Moreover, optimism has been linked to better recovery from surgery and improved coping skills during stressful situations.
A review of 15 studies involving over 200,000 participants indicated that optimists had a 35% lower chance of developing heart disease and a 14% lower chance of early death compared to pessimists.
This growing body of evidence emphasises that while genuine optimism acknowledges challenges and seeks solutions, toxic positivity dismisses those challenges entirely.
The former builds your resilience and supports mental well-being; the latter leads to feelings of isolation and invalidation.
Choose wisely.
Striking the Balance
So how do we strike this balance?
Throughout my journey from travel executive to founder of The Brighter Side of Everything, I've picked up a few tricks:
Embrace the full spectrum of emotions: Remember, it's okay to feel down sometimes. Acknowledging your feelings - both positive and negative - is crucial for emotional well-being.
Practice realistic optimism: Instead of saying "Everything will be fine," try "This is tough, but I've got the strength to handle it."
Offer empathy, not dismissal: When someone shares their struggles, resist the urge to immediately jump to silver linings. Sometimes, a simple "That sounds really difficult" is more supportive than any positive platitude.
Develop your gratitude: Focus on what's going well in your life but don't use it as a way to dismiss valid concerns or challenges.
Learn from setbacks: Instead of glossing over difficulties, see them as opportunities for you to grow and learn.
As the always insightful Brené Brown says, "The dark does not destroy the light; it defines it. It's our fear of the dark that casts our joy into the shadows."
Isn't that a beautiful way to look at it?
In my experience - both personally and in leading many teams - I’ve found that acknowledging challenges while maintaining hope for the future creates a much more authentic and empowering environment.
It's not about ignoring the dark clouds but about finding the courage to dance in the rain.
So my friends, as we navigate this beautiful mess called life, let's strive for genuine optimism.
Let's create space for all our emotions while nurturing hope and resilience.
After all, it's not about having a perfect journey but about embracing the adventure with open hearts and minds.
Remember, on The Brighter Side of Everything, there's room for both sunshine and shadows.
It’s in accepting both that we truly learn to thrive.

Jose Ramirez
The best player you’ve never heard of.
As the dust settles on another thrilling MLB postseason, it’s hard not to reflect on the pure romance that playoff baseball brings.
Watching these games fills me with a sense of peace that few other sports can provide.
While many fans clamour for more action, higher scores, and quicker play, I find solace in the rhythm of baseball.
It slows me down, allows me to get lost in my thoughts and offers a comfort that watching other sports simply doesn’t match.
When you look at the final four teams this season, one of them simply doesn't belong; they’re punching above their weight and it's incredibly inspiring to follow along.
In the environment of high stakes and unforgettable moments, one player stands out not just for his performance but for his loyalty: Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Guardians.
In an era dominated by massive contracts and player movement, Jose embodies a team-first mentality that has resonated deeply with fans.

From Humble Beginnings to MLB Star
Born in 1992 in Bani, Dominican Republic, Jose grew up dreaming of making it to the big leagues.
When the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) signed him in 2009 for just $50,000, he was far from a top prospect.
His small stature (5'9") and lack of raw power made many scouts overlook him.
However, Jose had an incredible work ethic and a burning desire to prove everyone wrong.
He quickly climbed through the minor leagues and made his MLB debut in 2013 at just 20 years old.
By 2016, he had established himself as a key player on a Cleveland team that reached the World Series.
They lost game seven in extra innings after a rain delay but we’re not here to talk about that.
The Rise of a Guardian
As Ramirez's skills blossomed, so did his importance to the team.
He has become a perennial All-Star and MVP candidate, known for his switch-hitting prowess, defensive excellence and baserunning intelligence.
But it's not just his on-field performance that endears him to Cleveland fans.
Jose plays with unbridled joy and hustle.
He gives everything.
Every time.
Whether he's stretching a single into a double or making spectacular plays at third base, he gives 100% effort every time.
As a result, his teammates feed off this energy, creating a culture of hard work and determination that defines the Guardians.
Loyalty in the Face of Free Agency
In 2022, as Ramirez approached free agency, many expected him to sign a massive contract with a big-market team.
But Jose shocked everyone by signing a seven-year, $141 million extension with Cleveland.
Now, $141 million is still a substantial sum of money.
But it’s significantly less than what he would have commanded on the open market, likely upwards of $200 million or more if he had tested free agency (the period during which players can negotiate contracts with any team, often leading to lucrative deals).
By choosing to stay in Cleveland, Jose left anywhere from $60 to $150 million on the table.
"I wanted to stay here in Cleveland. I love the fans, my teammates, and this organization," Ramirez said after signing the deal.
"My goal is to win a World Series here. This is where I want to be."
This kind of team-friendly deal is sadly rare in modern sports and speaks volumes about his character and commitment to the Guardians organisation.
More Than Just a Player
Ramirez's impact extends far beyond his statistics; he's become a hero in Cleveland.
Fans chant "Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose" every time he comes to bat - not just for his on-field exploits but for his unwavering commitment to the city and his teammates.
One major reason why the Guardians were able to compete in this year's championship series is due to Jose's approach and dedication. "We're building something special here," he often says.
"I believe in this team."
Because of you Jose, so do I.
The Guardians' Culture
Jose's loyalty reflects the culture that the Guardians organisation has built over the last decade.
Despite having one of the lower payrolls in baseball, because they play in a smaller market, they consistently compete at a high level.
This is due to the high expectations set and camaraderie built by players like Ramirez.
The Guardians' clubhouse is known for its positive atmosphere - players genuinely enjoy each other's company, hang out playing Mario-Kart and chess after games and always push each other to improve.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Ramirez's approach inspires young fans everywhere.
In October I attended two Guardians playoff games - driving 5 hours from Toronto each time.
At one game, I saw Lane Thomas deliver a grand slam; then the following week, I returned with my son (a Blue Jays fan).
Even though they lost to the Yankees, it was an amazing experience to share with him.
I shared stories about Jose's loyalty, hustle and the team's admirable recent history, transitioning their name from Indians to Guardians.
By the end of that game, my son was cheering for Jose along with everyone else!
He bought himself a new hat and may even be on his way to becoming a new Guardians fan.
The Quest for a World Series
As Ramirez continues his career with the Guardians, his goal remains clear: bring a World Series title to Cleveland.
The team has come close in recent years but hasn't quite crossed that finish line yet.
However, Jose believes they have what it takes.
"We have the talent, we have the heart," he says confidently.
"It's not a matter of if we'll win a World Series but when."
Jose's Unique Approach and Legacy
Jose Ramirez is more than just an incredible player; he's setting an example for all athletes - especially kids - about what truly matters in sports: teamwork, loyalty and love for the game over chasing dollars alone.
His decision to stay with the Guardians isn't just about today; it's about cementing a legacy as one of the greatest players in franchise history.
With multiple All-Star selections and Silver Slugger awards already under his belt, it's not hard to imagine that one day, a statue of Jose Ramirez might stand outside Progressive Field.
This legacy transcends sports; it’s about being a role model who shows young fans there’s more to success than just financial gain.
For parents like myself, Jose's story provides powerful lessons to share with our children.
When I took my son to that Guardians game, watching him become captivated by Jose's play, I realised how impactful such role models can be.
So here's to Jose Ramirez, a guardian in every sense of the word, protecting baseball's spirit in Cleveland while proving that loyalty still matters in sports today.
His journey reminds us that sometimes the most rewarding path isn't always one with the biggest paycheck at its end; it's about finding where you belong while giving your all.
And most importantly, inspiring others along your journey.
In an age where player movement is common and loyalty often seems like a relic of the past, Jose shows us it's still possible to build something meaningful - a legacy remembered long after every final pitch is thrown.
Thank you, Jose.
"His ability to perform under pressure while remaining humble is what makes him one of the best players in baseball today."

The Los Angeles League of Musicians by LA LOM
The Los Angeles League of Musicians is a vibrant debut album that immerses you in the infectious rhythms and lively spirit of cumbia.
Cumbia … what’s that?!
It’s a musical genre that originated in Colombia, characterised by its rich blend of African, Indigenous and European cultural elements.
LA LOM, a trio comprised of Zac Sokolow (guitar), Jake Faulkner (bass) and Nicholas Baker (drums/percussion), has crafted a collection of instrumental tracks that blend modern influences with the rich traditions of Latin music, delivering an exhilarating listening experience.
Key Highlights:
Eclectic Soundscapes: The album features 13 tracks that showcase a delightful mix of genres, including psychedelic cumbia, surf rock and even hints of Hawaiian slide guitar. Each song transports you to sun-soaked California, conjuring images of backyard parties and late-night drives along the coast.
Standout Tracks: Notable tracks like "San Fernando Rose" begin with a brooding guitar reminiscent of Santana before blossoming into a lush soundscape filled with vibrant percussion. Meanwhile, "Danza De LA LOM" invites you to dance with its infectious groove and playful transitions.
Lyrical Absence, Emotional Presence: While the album is entirely instrumental, it speaks volumes through its dynamic compositions. The lack of vocals allows each instrument to shine and showcases the band's ability to convey emotion without words. Songs like "Ghosts of Gardena" highlight their tight-knit synergy, where every note feels intentional and connected.
My Takeaway:
What resonates most about The Los Angeles League of Musicians is its ability to blend joy with artistry.
Every time I drop the needle I can’t help but lose myself in the groove.
LA LOM has created an album that feels both celebratory and introspective, making it perfect for any occasion - whether you're hosting or enjoying a quiet evening at home.
Their innovative approach breathes new life into traditional sounds while honouring their roots.
If you’re looking for an album that captures the essence of Southern California while offering a fresh take (or even your first take) on cumbia, The Los Angeles League of Musicians by LA LOM is a great listen.
Get ready to be transported to sun-drenched days filled with rhythm and warmth.
I’ve got zero doubt it’ll get you moving 🕺💃
“Listening to LA LOM is like turning the radio dial to discover a series of stations that music obsessives could only dream of.”

A Bright Idea to Consider
Lessons from the Brightest Thinkers.
This clever insight from Kobi Simmons is a powerful reminder that our perceived value often depends on our environment and context.
Just like that bottle of water, our worth can fluctuate based on where we are and who we’re with.
Choose wisely.
Consider these aspects:
Context Matters: Just as water is valued differently in various settings, our skills and contributions can be undervalued in the wrong environment. Recognising this can help us seek out spaces where we are appreciated.
Self-Worth: It's essential to remember that your worth is inherent and not determined by external factors. If you feel undervalued, it may be time to reassess your surroundings.
Surround Yourself Wisely: Being in a supportive environment - whether at work or in personal relationships - can significantly impact how you perceive your own value.
Embrace Change: If you find yourself in a place where your worth isn’t recognised, don’t hesitate to make a change. Seek out opportunities that align with your skills and passions.
Trust Your Intuition: Listen to your instincts about where you feel valued and appreciated. Your gut feelings can guide you toward better opportunities.
Lesson:
Just like the value of that bottle of water, your worth can change based on your surroundings.
By recognising when you're in a place that doesn't appreciate your contributions, you can take action to find environments that do.
"Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth."
