Say It Right
Why it’s not what we say but how we say it.
Welcome to The Brighter Side of Everything.
This newsletter serves a simple purpose → To help you build optimism, resilience and a solution-focused perspective.
Each week, I’ll share actionable insights that not only brighten your day but position you to be a leader within your own life and seize life’s opportunities.
Read time: 8-10 minutes.
Hi everyone,
Thank you to all subscribers both new and old.
This past week has been incredibly tough for us as a family, following the passing of my Mum.
I cannot say thank you enough for the countless messages of love and support over the last few days, it means the world to my family and me.
Yet, amidst the sadness, although raw and overwhelming at times, I’ve seen something beautiful emerge: our family coming together in a meaningful way.
Her passing has brought us closer.
As we spend time in rural NSW, Australia - exploring areas where I grew up, we're not just mourning; we’re sharing stories and memories that remind us of her love.
My children are meeting relatives they’ve spent very little time with, some for the very first time.
It’s heartwarming to see them connect with their roots and learn about the deep ties and relationships their Granny established.
New Adventures for the Kids
This week has also been filled with new experiences for my kids.
They’ve ridden ATVs, learned to ride horses, held 12-hour-old baby lambs in their arms and seen countless native Australian animals in the wild. These moments are a reminder that even in grief, life can be filled with beauty.
Mum’s passing has opened doors to new adventures that help us celebrate her life and the legacy she left behind.
Holding a 12-hour-old lamb.
Having a strong support system during this time has been invaluable.
Family and friends have rallied around us, offering comfort and understanding and it’s hard to imagine what we would do without such steadfast support.
Sharing our grief makes everything feel a little lighter.
It’s still incredibly hard but knowing we aren’t walking this path alone gives great comfort and we can talk through our memories of my Mum without feeling alone.
This support transforms our sadness into a celebration of her life, reminding us of the love she shared with all of us.
Nature’s Healing Touch
Immersing ourselves in the picturesque landscapes of regional Australia has also been healing.
The vast skies and native wildlife remind me that life goes on, just like the flowers that bloom in the harshest conditions.
Nature reflects resilience and it encourages us to find strength in our own challenges.
Even though Mum is no longer with us, her spirit lives on.
Over the last week it’s felt like time has stood still.
We’re sharing stories about her, passing down family traditions and keeping her memory alive.
This connection helps us feel that she’s still a part of our family, guiding us as we navigate this new chapter in life.
In the end, while losing Mum is painful, it has brought our family together in profound ways.
We’re finding beauty in our shared experience and honouring her legacy through love and connection.
Be sure to take the time to appreciate the love and connections around you; they’re what make life truly beautiful.
They are the most powerful gifts we have, reminding us that even in our hardest moments, we are never alone.
See you on the Brighter Side,
Chris 💗

"Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep"
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush.
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Say It Right
Why it’s not what we say but how we say it.
When we communicate, put simply, we want our message to be clear and received as intended.
However, by emphasising particular words, it can change the entire meaning of a sentence and in turn the interpretation of the receiver.
This adds an element of potential confusion (or fun depending on your sense of humour) to each message.
Choose your words wisely though, as they can often be misinterpreted.
This technique is known as stress or intonation and is a powerful tool for highlighting key points and conveying emotions within a conversation.
As an Australian living in Canada, I’ve had to learn the following lesson:
It’s not up to others to understand me, it’s up to me to ensure I am understood by others.
Especially if you are in a position of leadership.
I found myself repeating things constantly due to my varied emphasis and intonation that lives within my accent.
Where you place emphasis or use intonation plays a vital role in clarifying the meaning of a sentence to the listener (or reader).
For example:
Rising intonation can indicate a question.
While falling intonation signals a statement.
Emphasising different words can alter the focus and meaning of a sentence entirely.
Take the example on this image for instance.
The sentence “I never said she stole my money” can convey different meanings based on which word you place emphasis on.
“I” implies that someone else said it.
“never” suggests a timing-related denial.
“said” implies communication via other means.
“she” shifts the focus to a specific individual.
“stole” highlights the nature of the action.
“my” indicates personal ownership.
“money” draws attention to the object in question.
This concept reminds me of the classic "Who's on First?" comedy sketch by Abbott and Costello.
In this routine, the duo hilariously navigates a conversation filled with misunderstandings, all stemming from the emphasis placed on names
It’s a perfect illustration of how easily communication can go awry when we don’t pay attention to how we say things.
Just like in the sketch, where the confusion leads to laughter, our own conversations can lead to misunderstandings if we’re not careful.
With practice, you can learn to modulate your emphasis and intonation which helps ensure that your message is clearly understood.
By being mindful of this impact you can change the meaning of a message and adapt your communication to different situations.
As a result, you can enhance your ability to communicate effectively and achieve your intended outcome.
"Communication is about what is received, not what is intended. If there is a gap between what you are saying and what they are hearing, you have to find a new way to say it."

If you’re keen on developing a more optimistic outlook, here are some practical tips to get started:
Practice Daily Gratitude: Take time each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for. This simple practice can quickly shift your focus toward the positive aspects of your life.
Reframe Your Perspective: When faced with challenges, try to view them as opportunities rather than obstacles. This shift in thinking can empower you to tackle difficulties head-on.
