Hi Everyone,
Thanks for being part of our community - I appreciate you being here!
With the end of another year approaching, I've been reflecting on the importance of celebrating small wins.
It can be incredibly motivational to acknowledge your progress.
As many of us rush through life, we overlook our achievements, choosing to focus on what lies ahead.
Recently, as in yesterday, the Brighter Side reached 2000 subscribers!
This is a milestone I’m incredibly proud of, and is a testament to each of you.
I’m so grateful for your support and engagement, THANK YOU!
Thank you! - sign beautifully enhanced by my daughter.
It’s so uplifting to know there are so many of us dedicated to being optimistic, seeing life through a positive lens and focused on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems.
While we’re celebrating, I encourage you to take a moment this week to reflect on your own victories - whether it’s completing a project, overcoming a challenge, or simply making it through a challenging day.
There are always small victories worth acknowledging, no matter how insignificant they may seem.
Recognising these moments can boost your motivation and remind you of how far you’ve come.
Which brings me to our topic for this week:
That life is hard.
Our time on this earth involves solving problems, one after the other, and celebrating your wins is crucial in maintaining your progress forward.
Lastly, I received some feedback last week that there were some challenges downloading the app, thanks for letting me know.
I’ve now updated the instructions and included them further below for any who were facing challenges.
Have a great week and I’ll see you on the Brighter Side,
Chris
P.S. Feel free to send me feedback on how I can improve. Go on, drop me a line, I respond to every email.
Life is a Puzzle
Why embracing your authentic self can make it seem easier.
Let's have a heart-to-heart about something we all know, but often forget:
Life is hard.
Yep, I said it.
It can be really difficult at times, and how you respond to these moments will largely determine your success in life.
I'll be honest with you – this wasn't always easy for me to accept.
There was a time when I struggled with the constant challenges life threw my way.
I'd get frustrated, wondering why things couldn't just be smooth sailing.
It felt like I was the only one facing these hurdles while everyone else had it all figured out.
But here's the thing – as I've grown and experienced more of life's ups and downs, I've come to a realisation that's been game-changing for me.
I truly believe that everyone is unique and quirky in their own way, and we're all simply doing the best we can with the hand we've been dealt.
Once I internalised this fact, life became infinitely easier, and I freed myself from the burdens of expectation.
We are capable of so much more than we believe but to make it happen, you have to embrace hard.
For me, this shift didn't happen overnight.
It was a gradual process of learning, reflecting, and yes, facing challenges.
But with each obstacle I’ve overcome, I gained a little more perspective and more importantly, a little more experience.
I started to see that these difficulties weren't just roadblocks – they were opportunities to grow.
Now, stick with me here, because I'm about to share a little secret that successful people understand, but rarely talk about.
It's a three-word philosophy that might just change your perspective on everything.
The Three-Word Secret Sauce
Ready for it?
Here it is: "Life is difficult."
I know, I know.
You're probably thinking, "Gee, thanks Captain Obvious!"
But hear me out.
This simple phrase, first coined by psychiatrist Scott Peck in his book "The Road Less Travelled," is more powerful than you might think.
You see, once we truly understand and accept that life is difficult, something magical happens – it suddenly becomes a lot less difficult.
It's like we've cracked the code, and now we're in on the secret.
When we expect and have experience with challenges, we're better prepared to face them head-on.
Eating Problems for Breakfast
But wait, there's more!
Dr. Henry Cloud takes this idea a step further in his book "Integrity."
He talks about "eating problems for breakfast" as the key to personal growth and success.
It's not just about knowing that life is full of challenges; it's about being prepared to meet and resolve them head-on.
Think about it this way: life is essentially a series of problems to solve.
One after the other.
The folks who succeed are those who not only realise this but are equipped to deal with each problem as it comes.
It's about developing resilience and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles.
As I've embraced this mindset, I've found myself approaching difficulties with a newfound sense of curiosity and determination.
Instead of feeling defeated by my problems, I now see them as puzzles waiting to be solved.
It's not always easy but it's definitely more empowering and the steps forward you take as a result, are priceless.
Everyone's a Little Weird (And That's Okay!)
Now, let's circle back to something I mentioned earlier – everyone is weird and quirky in their own way.
This isn't just a cute saying; it's a fundamental truth that can transform how you interact with the world.
When you truly internalise this idea, you start to see people differently.
That grumpy cashier?
Maybe they're having a tough day dealing with personal issues.
The colleague who always seems to disagree with you?
Perhaps they're just approaching problems from a different angle, shaped by their unique perspective.
Understanding that everyone is doing their best with the hand they've been dealt can be incredibly liberating.
It frees you from the burden of unrealistic expectations – both for yourself and just as importantly, others.
It allows you to approach all interactions with less judgment and more empathy.
The opposite though, will make you miserable.
Setting unsubstantiated expectations on people you’ve never met or whose situation in life you barely understand will only lead to frustration and disappointment.
When you impose your own standards and assumptions on others, you create a barrier that prevents genuine connection and understanding.
Instead of growing relationships, you develop resentment and misunderstanding.
Authenticity: Your Superpower
Let's talk about something that might seem counterintuitive at first: the power of embracing your quirks.
You know those little oddities that make you uniquely you?
The ones you might sometimes try to hide?
Well, here's another secret – they're actually your superpower.
When you let your authentic self shine through, quirks and all, something magical happens.
It's like you're sending out a signal to the world, saying, "This is me, in my wonderfully unique glory!"
And you know what?
People respond to that.
Think about it.
When you keep your guard up, trying to fit into some imagined mould of how you 'should' be, you're not just hiding your quirks – you're hiding yourself.
And when you do that, you miss out on genuine connections with others who might appreciate the real you.
I've experienced this firsthand.
There was a time when I was so focused on presenting a 'professional' image that I kept my quirky side under wraps.
But you know what?
It was exhausting and I felt like I was never truly connecting with anyone.
It wasn't until I started letting my guard down – sharing my offbeat sense of humour, admitting to my unique interests and even laughing at my missteps – that I started forming deeper, more meaningful relationships.
Suddenly, I was attracting people who appreciated me for who I really am, not who I thought I should be.
And here's the kicker – by embracing my own quirks, I created a safe space for others to do the same.
It's like giving people permission to be themselves around you.
When you're authentic, you invite authenticity in return.
So, the next time you're tempted to hide that quirky part of yourself, remember this: your uniqueness is your strength.
It's what makes you interesting, relatable, and real.
By embracing it, you're not just being true to yourself – you're opening doors to connections and opportunities you may never have accessed.
"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."
Problem-Solving: The Universal Skill
Let’s explore an exciting idea: problem-solving is a universal skill that connects us all, no matter what we do.
Think about it: whether you’re a software developer crafting a new app or a chef whipping up a delicious meal, at the heart of your work lies the same core activity – solving problems.
Take a software developer, for instance. One I worked with once told me, "Writing code isn’t just about knowing the right syntax; it’s about figuring out how to make everything work seamlessly together."
When they encounter a bug, it’s not just about fixing an error; it’s about diving deep into the logic of the program and ensuring that users have a smooth experience.
This shift in perspective is powerful.
It shows us that whether you’re developing software or anything else in this world, it will require innovative solutions to complex challenges.
Ultimately, this insight serves as a reminder: we are all problem-solvers at our core.
Each of us faces our own unique set of challenges in our daily lives and professions.
By recognising this, you can appreciate the creativity and resilience that problem-solving brings to every task.
So next time you encounter a challenge - big or small - remember that you’re not alone; you’re part of a vast community of problem-solvers.
Whether you’re designing software, preparing a meal, or even raising a family, the ability to identify issues and develop effective solutions is what drives success.
Building Your Problem-Solving Muscles
So, how do we become better problem-solvers?
Here are a few tips to help you flex those mental muscles:
Watch Your Language: Pay attention to how you talk about challenges. Instead of saying, "This is impossible," try saying, "This is tricky, but I'll figure it out." Your words shape your mindset, and a positive mindset can make all the difference.
Step Toward Difficulty: When things get tough, it's tempting to hide under the covers or avoid confrontation altogether. But progress only happens when we face reality head-on. Remember that every challenge you overcome makes you stronger and better equipped for the next one.
Prepare for Short-Term Pain: Accept that things might get worse before they get better. This mental preparation can help you stay in the game when others might quit. It's about playing the long game and understanding that growth often comes with discomfort.
Keep Your Eyes on the Prize: Focus on solving the immediate problem but don't lose sight of your long-term goals. Each problem you solve is a step towards where you want to be.
Embracing the Quirks, Solving the Puzzles
Life is an endless series of puzzles, and each of us is simply trying to figure it out.
When we accept that life is difficult and that everyone has their unique quirks, we free ourselves to approach challenges with curiosity and resilience.
Remember, it's not about having all the answers; it's about being willing to face the questions and work through the problems.
And hey, if we can learn to appreciate each other's quirks along the way, all the better.
After all, in a world that often pressures us to conform, being unapologetically you is the bravest and most attractive thing you can do.
Go ahead, let your unique flag fly – you might be surprised who salutes it.
So, the next time you're faced with a challenge - big or small - remember: life is difficult; everyone's a little weird; and that's perfectly okay.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."
The Man Who Grew a Forest
Sehmus Erginoglu's Incredible Legacy
You know, in a world where it can seem like everyone's out for themselves, it's refreshing to come across a story that reminds us of the power of selflessness and dedication.
Let’s talk about Sehmus Erginoglu.
Sehmus is a 71-year-old man from Mardin, Turkey, who's become a real-life hero in many ways.
Picture this: Thirty years ago, he looked out at a barren wasteland in his hometown, and within it, he saw potential where others saw nothing.
Instead of shrugging his shoulders and walking away, he rolled up his sleeves and got to work.
And boy, did he work.
From Wasteland to Wonderland
First things first, Sehmus started clearing out the trash.
I mean, we're talking about a proper dump here.
But he didn't stop there.
He had a vision, and he was determined to see it through.
He installed water pipes and began planting saplings.
One by one, tree by tree, Sehmus started bringing life back to this forgotten patch of earth.
Now, thirty years later, what do we have?
A thriving forest with around 11,000 trees that Sehmus planted himself.
But wait, there's more.
His efforts inspired others and now there are over 30,000 trees across the region.
Talk about a ripple effect.
Daily Dedication
You might think planting the trees was the hard part, but Sehmus knows better.
Every single day, rain or shine, this 71-year-old man heads out to tend to his trees.
He's tapped into natural springs to keep them watered, ensuring they not only survive but thrive in the harsh Turkish climate.
And here's the kicker - Sehmus doesn't get paid a dime for this.
Not a single lira.
But you know what?
He couldn't care less about money.
For him, the real reward is seeing people enjoy the fruits of his labour.
Literally!
People come from all around to picnic under the shade of his trees, and that brings a smile to his face wider than anything else.
A Philosophy of Nature and Legacy
I’m sure you agree, this is a remarkable story.
Now, let's dive a bit deeper into what makes Sehmus tick.
This guy has a philosophy that's as deep-rooted as his trees.
When asked about his motivation, Sehmus said something that really stuck with me:
"Nature is our mother. If we take care of her, she takes care of us. These trees aren't just for me; they're for everyone who comes after me. That's the legacy I want to leave behind."
Can you believe that?
In a world obsessed with instant gratification, here's a man thinking decades ahead.
He's not planting these trees for himself - he's planting them for generations he'll never even meet.
Sehmus also shared his thoughts on community:
"When I started this project, people thought I was crazy. But now, they see the value of what we've created together. It's not just about the trees; it's about bringing people together, giving them a place to connect with nature and each other."
More Than Just Trees
But here's the thing - Sehmus isn't just growing trees.
He's growing hope.
He's growing community.
He's growing a legacy that will outlive him by centuries.
While many are worried about climate change and deforestation, this one man decided to be the change he wanted to see in the world.
And let's not forget the impact on the local ecosystem.
These 11,000 (30,000) trees aren't just providing shade for picnickers.
They're home to countless birds, insects and small animals.
They're improving air quality, preventing soil erosion and who knows?
They might even be helping to combat climate change in their small way.
Leading by Example
You know what really gets me about Sehmus?
He's not out there preaching or telling others what to do.
He's just quietly going about his business, leading by example.
And that example is powerful.
It shows us that one person really can make a difference.
It shows us that it's never too late to start something meaningful.
I mean, Sehmus was in his 40s when he started this project.
His story is a reminder that true wealth isn't purely about what you have, but what you give.
It's about the legacy you leave behind, the lives you touch and the positive change you bring to the world.
My Takeaway
So, what can we learn from Sehmus and his story?
Well, for starters, we can learn that it's never too late to start making a difference.
We can learn that small actions, repeated day after day, can lead to monumental changes.
And we can learn that true fulfilment comes not from what we accumulate, but from what we contribute.
Sehmus didn't set out to become a hero or an inspiration.
He just saw a problem and decided to fix it.
And in doing so, he's created something beautiful that will benefit generations to come.
As Sehmus himself puts it:
"You can't take material wealth with you when you die, but the good deeds you do in this world? Those stick around. That's why I do this. It's my way of saying thank you to the earth and leaving something positive behind."
So, the next time you're feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world, remember Sehmus.
Remember that one person, armed with nothing but determination and a vision, can transform a wasteland into a forest.
And ask yourself - what's your wasteland?
What's the change you want to see in the world?
Because who knows?
Maybe thirty years from now, someone will be writing about you and the forest you grew.

Now Playing: Cinema 3000 by Common Saints
Hey folks, this week I'm thrilled to share an album that's been on repeat for me lately: Cinema 3000 by Common Saints.
Now, I know that music tastes vary from person to person, but sometimes an album comes along that resonates with you, puts you in a great mood and gets better with every listen.
Almost like a joyful trance.
This one is that for me, I just can't stop listening to it.
Key Highlights:
Nostalgic Yet Fresh Sound: Common Saints (aka Charlie Perry) has delivered an album that feels both familiar and innovative. It's like stepping into a time machine set for the early 2000s, with echoes of Morcheeba and Air, but with a modern twist, that keeps it feeling fresh and relevant.
Immersive Soundscapes: From the chilled vibes of the opening track, "Sweet Release", to the introspective tones of "Piece of War," each song creates a rich, atmospheric experience that pulls you in deeper with every listen. The album is characterised by "warm musicality, positivity and a grounded sense of spirituality and hope."
Thoughtful Lyricism: Perry's storytelling taps into some profound themes, exploring questions of identity, love and our collective consciousness. It's the kind of album that makes you think while it makes you feel.
Masterful Production: The production on this album is top-notch. Perry's background as a producer for big names like BTS and Jorja Smith shines through in the intricate layering and polished sound of each track.
My Takeaway:
What resonates most with me regarding Cinema 3000 is how it manages to be both a fantastic background album AND a deeply engaging listening experience.
I've found myself putting it on while working, only to find myself completely lost in the music, picking up new details with each play.
The standout track for me has to be "Rebel Paradise."
It's the longest song on the album, and it takes you on a real journey.
There's a definite Pink Floyd influence here, and it showcases Perry's ability to blend classic psychedelic rock with modern production techniques.
I also can't get enough of "Dream On," which features some gorgeous guest vocals from French singer Taloula.
It's got this dreamy, Morcheeba-esque vibe that I just can't get enough of.
What I love most about this album is how it seems to deepen my connection not just to the music, but to myself and the world around me.
It feels like a call to yourself to just keep on carrying on - an invitation to slow down and be present in the moment.
If you're looking for an album that'll take you on a journey, make you think, and leave you feeling more connected and alive, I can't recommend Cinema 3000 enough.
It's a beautiful piece of work that I hope will resonate with a lot of you out there.
Trust me on this one, folks.
Give it a listen, preferably with some good headphones and a quiet moment to yourself.
I’ve got a feeling this album is going to be the soundtrack of my life for a while to come.
“The gentle groove pulls the listener into a headspace where the ordinary becomes sacred.”

Please share; I love hearing of great new suggestions.
A Bright Idea to Consider
Lessons from the Brightest Thinkers.

This telling insight is a great reminder that our greatest battles often occur within ourselves.
Life is all about living it to the fullest.
Not wasting precious moments battling your thoughts and feelings.
You are your own best friend, not your enemy.
Consider these aspects:
Self-Acceptance: Accepting who you are - flaws, quirks, and all - is liberating. Why waste time fighting with the incredible & unique person staring back at you in the mirror?
The Magic of Inner Peace: When you make peace with yourself, magic happens. You start to glow from the inside out, radiating confidence and positivity.
Letting Go of Self-Doubt: You deserve to feel happy and at peace with yourself. Let go of those self-doubts and insecurities, and embrace who you are!
Creating a Life You Love: Remember, every second you spend criticizing yourself is a second lost in creating a life you love. Focus on building the life you want rather than tearing yourself down.
Embracing Your Journey: Life's too short for anything less than self-love and acceptance. Embrace yourself, embrace your journey and watch how the universe begins to align in your favour.
Lesson:
Life is too precious to spend in conflict with ourselves.
By embracing our true selves and letting go of the need for approval, you open yourself up to a life filled with joy, authenticity and genuine connections.
Final Thought:
Make a pact with yourself - no more inner battles, just self-love and acceptance.
Embrace who you are; it's the first step toward building a life that truly reflects your values and passions.
"The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are."
A previous tweet …
Perfectionism is one of the biggest blockers to swift decision-making.
Because it operates on faulty all-or-nothing thinking.
Try asking questions like “what could I do today that will bring me closer to where I want to be?
Then take that step.
