Hey there!

Welcome to our newest subscribers and special thanks to those of you who continue to read along.

Last week, we began our tour of holistic wealth on the social side of the coin.

This week, let's talk about something crucial: your physical health and its impact on your overall wealth.

It's a topic that's become increasingly important to me, especially in light of recent life changes.

I've always been an active person, but 18 months ago I realised just how much my lifestyle had changed.

In my most recent role, I found myself sitting at a desk all day, stuck in meetings and much less active than I had ever been.

We aren't built for a sedentary lifestyle and it became clear to me that I needed to have an exercise program in place to offset the negative impact on my body.

The Wake-Up Call

It’s so easy to take your health for granted, sometimes too easy.

Well, I was delivered a wake-up call when I realised I could no longer touch my toes and was starting to lose my breath while playing with my kids.

These might seem like small things, but for me, they were big red flags.

Our bodies send us signals all the time and ignoring them can lead to bigger issues down the road.

When I noticed these signs, it forced me to reflect on my lifestyle choices and how they were affecting my overall well-being.

As my physical health declined due to longer hours at a desk, I noticed a domino effect.

My energy tanked, my focus went out the window and I felt myself slipping into a negative cycle.

It was clear that my physical state was messing with my mental and emotional well-being too.

Recognising these signals early on allowed me to take proactive steps instead of waiting for an even more serious wake-up call.

Taking Action

So, what did I do? I started small.

10 squats, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups and some basic stretching every morning.

It wasn't much, but it was a start.

And sometimes, that's all we need – just to start somewhere.

Taking action is empowering.

Each small step I took built momentum and confidence.

As the days went by, I felt stronger and more capable.

This little 5-minute routine didn't just change my body; it changed my whole approach to fitness.

It reminded me that small, consistent actions will lead to big changes over time.

The key is to listen to your body and respond positively to its needs.

Embracing New Challenges

As the years have passed, I've learned how important strength and flexibility are.

But first, let me back up a bit.

I've always been an active person - playing sports, running, snowboarding, diving - you name it.

Running, in particular, was my favourite form of meditation.

I never listen to music, just me and my thoughts, pounding the pavement building resilience in silence.

It was my time to process, to plan, to simply be.

A very proud marathon finisher.

However, life has a way of throwing curveballs.

While training for the Berlin Marathon (my 3rd marathon), I developed a foot injury just three weeks out from the race - it was a Morton's neuroma and it sucked.

While I managed to finish the race, it was one of the most painful and challenging experiences I have ever overcome.

The pain kicked in from the 6 km mark, becoming more and more severe with every step.

Almost to the point it became numb.

Despite the pain, running through the Brandenburg Gate to cross the finish line was one of my proudest achievements.

It’s incredible what we can achieve (and overcome) with the right mindset.

This injury setback forced me to step away from long-distance running, something that had been a core part of my identity and mental health routine.

But as they say, when one door closes, another opens.

This injury led me to explore new forms of exercise.

I decided to give yoga a try, along with lifting and resistance training.

What started initially as 15 minutes a day, has now turned into a 60-90 minute full workout five times a week.

But here’s something interesting I've discovered: just as you can become addicted to things that negatively impact your body, you can equally become addicted to behaviours that impact you positively.

Today, I never miss a workout.

It takes priority over almost anything else.

This transition taught me a valuable lesson: when one door closes, another opens.

I may not be running marathons anymore, but I've found new challenges that are just as rewarding.

Each new activity brings fresh energy and excitement into my life and I've discovered strength and flexibility I never knew I had.

This experience reinforced the importance of adaptability.

Life will throw obstacles our way, but it's how we respond to these challenges that defines us.

By remaining open to new experiences and willing to adapt, we can turn setbacks into opportunities for growth and discovery.

The Mind-Body Connection

You know what's been really eye-opening?

The link between physical health and mental clarity.

Even on days when I'm not feeling it, I push through my workout and I always come out the other side feeling energised and focused.

It's really reinforced my belief in the power of staying positive and solution-focused.

When we prioritise our physical health, we create a solid foundation for mental clarity and emotional resilience.

This connection is vital; when our bodies feel good, our minds can thrive too.

Recognising this relationship has made me more aware of how essential it is to nurture both aspects of myself.

Nutrition: Fueling the Machine

Of course, physical health isn't just about exercise; it's also about what we put into our bodies.

My wife Tanya and I have come up with a rotation of simple, nutritious meals that fuel our bodies and set a good example for our kids.

It's not about fancy diets or supplements – just consistent, wholesome nutrition.

And let's be real - I haven't stopped having fun!

I still enjoy my favourite snacks and indulge when the time is right because there's great value in rewarding yourself.

When you deserve it.

Life is meant to be enjoyed!

If you remove all joy from your life in pursuit of perfection, you’ll become miserable.

That's why finding balance is key; it's about sticking to the 90-10 rule instead of an overly strict approach.

A New Relationship with Alcohol

Growing up in rural Australia, alcohol was a big part of my social and professional life.

But as I've focused more on my health, I've naturally cut back on drinking while still enjoying it when appropriate.

The benefits have been amazing – better focus, clearer skin and a healthier wallet too.

Reducing alcohol consumption has allowed me to feel more present in every moment - whether I'm working or spending time with family.

It's incredible how making small adjustments can lead to significant improvements in overall quality of life while still allowing room for enjoyment.

The 90-10 Approach

Screw the 80-20 rule, it leaves you with too much wasted effort.

The 90-10 principle suggests focusing even more intensely on the vital few activities that drive the majority of results.

One of many great things about living today is all the health information we have easy access to.

My approach is pretty simple: do what's good for me 90% of the time while allowing for flexibility in life's moments of indulgence.

This balanced approach helps me maintain consistency without feeling deprived or overwhelmed by strict rules.

It's about finding that sweet spot where you can enjoy life while still prioritising your health - because after all, life is meant to be enjoyed!

The Ripple Effect

Now 46, I feel fitter, stronger and more vibrant than ever before.

This physical transformation has had a ripple effect on every part of my life - my relationships are stronger because I'm more engaged; my work performance has improved because I'm more focused.

Investing in your physical health isn't just about feeling good - it's also a smart financial move.

Good health can significantly reduce your healthcare costs over time.

Studies have shown that individuals who maintain a healthy lifestyle spend less on medical expenses and have lower insurance premiums.

Moreover, better health often translates to increased productivity and fewer sick days—potentially leading to higher earnings and career advancement opportunities down the line.

By prioritising your physical well-being today, you're not just adding years to your life but also dollars to your bank account tomorrow.

Think of it this way: the money you spend on nutritious food or gym memberships today could save you thousands in medical bills later on.

It's all about recognising that taking care of yourself physically can directly contribute to your overall wealth.

My Takeaway

So what have I learned from all this?

Here are some practical tips for building physical wealth:

  1. Move consistently: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly.

  2. Eat well: Focus on lean meats, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and balanced nutrition.

  3. Prioritize sleep: Try to get 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

  4. Cut back on harmful habits: Reduce or eliminate smoking and excessive drinking.

  5. Stay on top of your health: Regular check-ups are essential. Stay disciplined with this.

  6. Build strong connections: Quality relationships contribute significantly to overall well-being.

  7. Maintain an optimistic outlook: A positive mindset will enhance your physical health and longevity.

  8. Be adaptable: Adjust your fitness routine as your body changes; this adaptability can translate to better resilience.

  9. Practice the 90-10 rule: Make healthy choices 90% of the time while allowing for flexibility.

  10. Remember the mind-body connection: Physical health and mental clarity go hand in hand.

Everyone's body is different; what works for me might not work for you.

The key is to find what lifts you up and makes you feel good - start small, be consistent and focus on progress rather than perfection.

Your physical health is the foundation for everything else in your life.

Invest in it wisely now so you can reap benefits later in ways you never imagined.

What small step can you take today towards better physical health?

Remember that every journey starts with a single step - there’s no better time to start than today.

Your future self will thank you!

See you on the Brighter Side,

Chris

George Miller

A Filmmaker with an Eye on the Future

George Miller, 2023

In the late 1970s, a young George Miller stood in the dusty Australian outback, surrounded by a small crew and a few rusted vehicles.

With limited resources, he was determined to create a cinematic world that had never been seen before.

As the sun set, casting an orange glow over the landscape, Miller felt a surge of excitement.

Despite the challenges ahead, he knew he was on the brink of something extraordinary.

Fast forward to 2015: at 70 years old, Miller finally had access to the advanced technology he had dreamed of decades earlier.

With Mad Max: Fury Road, he brought to life the vibrant chaos and raw emotion that had once existed only in his imagination.

His journey from humble beginnings to global acclaim exemplifies his belief in looking forward, embracing change and seizing every opportunity.

Australian filmmaker George Miller exudes an infectious enthusiasm for the future that belies his age.

Best known as the creator of the Mad Max franchise, his career spans over four decades of groundbreaking cinema.

But what sets him apart is not just his past accomplishments, but his relentless drive to push boundaries and embrace new possibilities.

A Unique Path to Filmmaking

Born in 1945 in Queensland, Australia, Miller's path to filmmaking was unconventional.

He initially pursued a career in medicine, working as an emergency room doctor in Sydney.

It was during this time that Miller's creative spark was ignited.

The visceral experiences of the ER, combined with his love for silent films and visual storytelling, led him to enrol in a film workshop.

This pivotal decision would set him on a new trajectory.

The Birth of Mad Max

In 1979, Miller directed his first feature film, Mad Max, starring a then unknown Mel Gibson.

Working with a shoestring budget of $350,000, Miller crafted a gritty, high-octane action film that would go on to become a global phenomenon.

However, the limitations of technology at the time meant that Miller's full vision for the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max remained partially unrealised.

Don’t get me wrong, Mad Max was cutting edge at the time but it fell short of Miller’s expectations when compared to his mind’s eye.

A Triumph of Innovation: Mad Max: Fury Road

Fast forward to 2015, and Miller, at the age of 70, released Mad Max: Fury Road.

This long-awaited sequel showcased Miller's unwavering commitment to innovation and his ability to harness cutting-edge technology.

The film was a masterful display of practical effects and stunts, enhanced by digital wizardry that allowed him to finally bring his complete vision to life.

Fury Road was met with critical acclaim, earning 10 Academy Award nominations and winning six.

I remember witnessing the following scene on the big screen and my jaw dropping to the floor; this is pure cinema.

Embracing Change and New Possibilities

What I find remarkable about Miller is not just his ability to adapt to new technologies but his enthusiasm for them.

In interviews, he often speaks about how advancements in filmmaking tools excite him, opening up new possibilities for storytelling.

This forward-thinking mindset is a key factor in his longevity and continued relevance in the industry.

A Diverse Portfolio: More Than Just Action

Miller's optimism extends beyond just filmmaking technology.

He sees the rapid pace of change in the world not as a threat but as an opportunity.

In a recent interview, he remarked, "The future is not something to be afraid of. It's something to be curious about, to explore."

This attitude has kept Miller's work fresh and innovative, even as he enters his ninth decade.

The filmmaker's embrace of change is evident in the diversity of his projects.

While known for high-octane action, most remain unaware that Miller has also directed family films like Babe and Happy Feet, showcasing his versatility and willingness to venture into new territories.

One of his most recent films, Three Thousand Years of Longing, is a romantic fantasy that further demonstrates his range and continued willingness to take creative risks.

Lessons in Longevity and Vitality

Miller's approach to aging and creativity offers valuable lessons.

Rather than resting on his laurels or becoming set in his ways, he remains open to new experiences and learning opportunities.

This mindset not only keeps his work relevant but also contributes to his personal vitality.

Research has shown that maintaining a positive outlook and engaging in mentally stimulating activities can contribute to better health and longevity in older adults.

2024: Furiosa

George Miller shows no signs of slowing down.

Furiosa, a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, was released in May 2024.

A few weeks ago I watched the video below and was so inspired by his vibrancy and excitement for the future.

He speaks with excitement about new technology and the techniques he was able to employ in this latest instalment, proving that his creative well is far from dry.

A Beacon of Optimism

George Miller's career is a testament to the power of embracing change and maintaining a forward-looking perspective.

His journey from emergency room doctor to visionary filmmaker demonstrates that it's never too late to pursue your passions.

More importantly, his continued enthusiasm for the future at 80 years old serves as an inspiration to people of all ages.

In a world that often fears change and often glorifies youth, Miller stands as a beacon of optimism and creativity.

His legacy is not just the films he's made but the example he sets: that with curiosity, adaptability and a positive outlook, you can continue to grow, create and inspire well into your later years.

As Miller himself puts it, "The best is yet to come."

For this iconic filmmaker, the future is not a destination but an ongoing adventure.

My Takeaways: Lessons from George Miller

  1. Embrace Change: View change as an opportunity vs. as a threat; it will lead to growth and new possibilities.

  2. Stay Curious: Keep an inquisitive mindset about the world around you; curiosity fuels creativity.

  3. Adaptability: Be willing to adapt your methods and embrace new technologies; innovation will enhance your work significantly.

  4. Lifelong Learning: Never stop learning or exploring new experiences; this keeps your mind active and engaged.

  5. Positivity: Develop an optimistic outlook; it contributes not only to personal happiness but also to longevity. The guy is 80 years old!

  6. Pursue Your Passions: It's never too late to follow your dreams; passion can drive you to fulfil your potential at any age.

As a human, George Miller serves as a powerful reminder that creativity knows no age limit and that optimism can inspire us all toward brighter and more fulfilling futures.

“Just because you’re living in an impoverished world, doesn’t mean people stopped making beautiful things”

Pleasurewood - They Live

They Live by Pleasurewood

They Live is a groovy album that transports you to a musical landscape inspired by the late 60s and early 70s.

At times it reminds me of the Doors with a blend of rock, blues, jazz and psychedelia.

Both bands challenge conventional themes, pushing boundaries in their songwriting and performance.

Pleasurewood has crafted a collection of instrumental tracks that blend jazzy, funky, and soulful elements into a cohesive and engaging listening experience.

Key Highlights:

Nostalgic Soundscape: The album evokes a sense of familiarity, stirring up musical memories that feel both fresh and comfortingly recognisable. Each track seems to awaken dormant musical visions from the past.

Uplifting Atmosphere: The uplifting compositions are designed to elevate your mood, encouraging a confident stride throughout your day.

Instrumental Mastery: Pleasurewood demonstrates skillful musicianship, creating meandering but purposeful melodies that captivate from start to finish.

My Takeaway:

What resonates most about They Live is its ability to create a soundtrack for daily life that feels both nostalgic and invigorating.

The instrumental nature of the album allows you to project your own emotions and experiences onto the music, making it a versatile companion for various moods and activities.

Pleasurewood has managed to capture the essence of a bygone era while infusing it with a contemporary energy that feels fresh and exciting.

This album is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates intricate instrumental compositions or seeks a musical escape to a more carefree time.

If you enjoy artists who blend retro influences with modern production techniques, They Live by Pleasurewood should be on your playlist.

"Remember that French movie from the 1970s — or was it a TV show? — that had the Hammond B3 organ rolling solos atop a funky beat before a trippy guitar came in to get you moving? ... Yeah, turns out you're just listening to They Live from Pleasurewood. Don't wait. Snag it now and enjoy."

Fluid Imagination - Review

Insights from an Expert

This insight from Eckhart Tolle challenges the conventional understanding of strength and control.

Often, we associate power with holding on tightly, defending our positions or maintaining control.

However, Tolle suggests that true power lies in the act of release.

Letting go isn't about giving up or admitting defeat.

It's about recognising when our attachment to something - be it a situation, a belief or an emotion - is no longer serving us.

It's an acknowledgment that sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is to surrender and allow life to unfold.

This concept applies to various aspects of our lives:

  1. Relationships: Holding onto toxic relationships or past hurts can drain our energy. Letting go can free us to heal and open ourselves to healthier connections.

  2. Career: Clinging to outdated goals or methods will hinder our growth. Releasing these can allow us to embrace new opportunities and adapt to changing circumstances.

  3. Emotions: Constantly defending our emotional state or holding onto negative feelings can be exhausting. Letting go of these emotions can lead to greater peace and emotional freedom.

  4. Possessions: Our attachment to things can sometimes weigh us down. Releasing what we don't need can create space for new experiences and growth.

  5. Control: Trying to control every aspect of our lives leads to stress and anxiety. Letting go of this need for control can bring a sense of peace and allow for unexpected positive outcomes.

When we embrace the power of letting go, we open ourselves to new possibilities and experiences.

We become more flexible, resilient and open to life's flow.

This doesn't mean we become passive; rather, we learn to discern when to act and when to release.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is to loosen your grip.

In doing so, you’ll likely find a new type of strength - one that comes from trust, acceptance and the courage to embrace change.
